Chapter 2

Will

I need to know who Hector meant as “the boys” in the logbook. I can't let the death of Wyatt and Hector be in vain, and I will always carry the burden of their death with me wherever I go.

I moved around the house looking for nothing in particular, but I needed to occupy my time, so I arranged some of my gears and checked them before returning them into their arsenal.

I returned to the room and sat on the bed, faced the wall, and shifted the duvet, uncovering Kat to look at her feminine features that I was attracted to.

I can't afford to let them get to Kat; I thought as I watched her sleep after the night we just had. Kat means the whole world to me now that all the people around me are all dead – My parents, Wyatt, and now Hector. I must do all I can to bring all those involved down.

I locked the door behind me as I left the house to go into town. Officer Smith was still on my case, but he was not giving me too many worries, so I was not bothered by him.

I realized I needed his help with Derrick's case because Kat was concerned about his whereabouts. I guessed he had gotten himself into some kind of trouble and had been caught.

I left the city's outskirts and rode my horse toward the station to talk to Officer Smith.

The rows of shops in front of the station were all opened, and people went about their business. The women in the hairdresser’s shop were all well dressed and were talking animatedly with each other. They laughed in intervals at what the other was saying.

The other shop owners sat quietly and watched as people passed by, calling them to come and buy their wares. I climbed the stairs leading to the station and stepped in as a young man in a long flowing top with grey pants was dragged into one of the rooms. I asked for Officer Smith and was directed to his office.

The stench from the cells along the corridor was terrible, and I wonder how the police officers can take such a smell, but then they must have gotten used to it.

Officer Smith was having his breakfast, so he used his hand to motion me inside.

“Come in, Mr. Carter,” he said as some of the grains of rice flew out of his mouth, and he swallowed the food in his mouth.

Bad mannered, eating and talking at the same time

“Thank you.”

“To what do I owe this visit?”

“A friend of Mr. Cruz has been missing for some days, and it’s kind of unusual because he hasn’t made contact with anyone.”

“Okay.”

He then went on to ask me about him, and I described him as Kat had described him to me. He opened the door and called in one of the officers from the corridor, and asked him to take down the information. He promised to ring me as soon as he got anything on him.
